Wormer — bordered by the protected Wormer- en Jisperveld.

Wormer sits on the eastern bank of the Zaan, directly across from Wormerveer, and it is genuinely its own place — not a Zaanstad suburb, but part of the separate municipality of Wormerland, formed in 1991 together with Jisp, Neck, Oostknollendam, and Spijkerboor. It also has no train station of its own. Both of those facts matter more to your ride than they might seem.

About Wormer (Postcode 1531)

Wormer is one of the oldest settlements in the Zaanstreek, first recorded in 1063, and it grew wealthy in the 16th and 17th centuries as a shipping-biscuit baking centre supplying VOC vessels and whaling ships out of Jisp. It sits just across the Zaanbrug from Wormerveer, whose train station, opened in 1869, is the nearest rail connection — Wormer itself has never had its own stop.

No Station of Your Own Means We’re the Direct Route

Reaching Wormer by public transport means a train to Wormerveer followed by a walk or bus connection across the Zaan. For most journeys — especially with luggage, at odd hours, or with a group — a direct taxi from your actual address in Wormer is simply the faster, more practical option. It is exactly the same situation as neighbouring Westzaan, and for the same reason.

The Wormer- en Jisperveld — A Different Side of the Zaanstreek

North of the village lies the Wormer- en Jisperveld, a protected peat-meadow nature reserve and one of the most important breeding grounds in Europe for meadow birds like the grutto (black-tailed godwit). Visitors come for kayaking and canoe routes through its narrow ditches, guided boat excursions, and walking routes such as the Laarzenpad and the Rondje Trickel. The main visitor centre, De Poelboerderij, is genuinely wheelchair accessible, with a paved path to the excursion boat and an induction loop for hearing aids — worth knowing if accessibility is a factor in your visit.

Is Wormer part of Zaanstad?
